To begin, as a small family owned and operated facility for over 30 years, we have maintained a level of quality with patient care that has made us leaders in the industry. By not having a Medicaid contract until 1995, we had to depend on our own ingenuity and reputation as an excellent healthcare provider in order to compete with the large nursing home chains for patient admissions. Thanks to a very loyal and dedicated staff, we have been able to achieve numerous goals (listed chronologically):

- Henderson family purchases Sudbury Pines Extended Care Facility and operates it as one of the largest completely private nursing homes in MA for the next 20 years. Sudbury Pines Extended Care starts providing Meals on Wheels for homebound citizens in the town of Sudbury and continues to do so today.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care has one of the largest short-term respite care programs allowing caregivers at home to leave their family member with us for a minimum of a 3-day stay, while they take a well-deserved vacation, manage a medical/family crisis, attend a family event, etc. Most of our respite patients return year after year, which allows them to stay at home much longer, since Sudbury Pines Extended Care is able to assist and support their caregivers.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care becomes a licensed contractor for Harvard Community Health Plan and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care becomes licensed by the Department of Public Health to provide Intravenous Therapy to patients, thereby eliminating the need to transfer the patient to the hospital in most instances. Sudbury Pines Extended Care now starts operating as a sub-acute facility.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care becomes licensed by the DPH to provide IV Therapy solutions directly to the heart via a Central Line for those who have no access available through their veins. Additionally, the DPH certifies Sudbury Pines Extended Care to provide TPN/Hyperalimentation treatment for those so acutely ill they are not able to ingest food or nutrients. Most IV services today are provided in a nursing home by a pharmacy company, not Sudbury Pines Extended Care. We wrote the regulation with the state and all of our nurses are IV Certified.

- Kids' Corner at the Pines opens, which is licensed for 44 children between the ages of 1 month to 7 years, which promotes the attraction, retention, and longevity, of some of the top professionals in the industry.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care donates the main activity/dining room to the Fairbanks Senior Center.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care becomes a Medicare Certified Provider, allowing our patients to benefit from the Federal Government insurance program, if eligible. Our name is changed formally to Sudbury Pines Extended Care (SPEC Center). Sudbury Pines Extended Care begins sponsoring a cookout for Sudbury senior citizens.

-1995 - Sudbury Pines Extended Care becomes one of the largest providers of rehabilitative services (Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy) in the state according to Medicare, with over a thousand patients, most with multiple admissions. Approximately, 85% of our patients return home after an average length of stay (ALOS) of 22 days, as well as a very active Medicare B program for our long term patients to maintain their highest level of independence.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care hires an on-site full time Nurse Practitioner to supplement the Physician services, new orders and prescriptions can be written immediately. Sudbury Pines Extended Care begins admitting 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

- Unlike most nursing facilities, Sudbury Pines Extended Care initiates a "Code Blue Team" members of the nursing team drill for patient emergencies such as heart attacks, etc. We are able to assess the patients, start CPR, put in an IV line and do an EKG in less than 5 minutes. We are 1000 feet from an emergency paramedic team, whose response time is approximately 4 minutes, upon arrival the patient is already stabilized. We are only 7 miles from MetroWest Medical Center - Framingham Campus, Emerson Hospital, and Marlborough Hospital.

- Health Care Finance Administration (HCFA), which oversees Medicare, awards Sudbury Pines Extended Care the status of "Atypical Nursing Care Facility" for providing "more care per dollar per day." The award is given to only a handful of facilities throughout the country; it is a permanent status for excellence in care, given proven medical care over a number of years (1991-1994).

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care becomes "Patient Advocated" to the MetroWest community, offering help and assistance relative to healthcare regulatory concerns and systems such as Medicare, Medicaid, etc. Sudbury Pines Extended Care is asked to speak on a variety of topics at over 50 different community, fraternal and organizational groups from Newton to Worcester.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care becomes a certified Medicaid Provider, servicing the inpatient medical needs of the Commonwealths recipients in the Medical Assistance Program.

- Numerous contracts are secured: HMO/insurance carriers, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, HCHP, as well as Minuteman, BayPath, and Parmenter Hospice. Renovations are in full swing and will be an ongoing process.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care opens a secured Alzheimer's Unit for 34 patients suffering from various forms of cognitive dementia. The program is endorsed by the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorder Association of Eastern, MA, it will be clinically supported and provide mental health services.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care has a deficiency-free Department of Public Health Survey.

- Sudbury Pines Extended Care receives the national endorsement of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) for its long and short-term care services.

– Developed an inpatient Hospice Program – 1st in the country to operate out of a Skilled Nursing Facility and be certified by Medicare & Medicaid.

– Bed expansion from 82 to 92 beds and all beds are Medicare Certified. 30th Year in operation as a family run facility.

– Received a grant from BayPath Respite Services to help caregivers at home, by providing short-term stays for their loved ones.

– JCAHO Certification renewed. Grant from BayPath renewed and doubled for short-term stay patients in the community to allow a brief respite for their caregivers.
As new events arise we will update you on our progress. Our marketing has primarily been "word of mouth" with the opinions of our former patients being our best asset! Many former patients have returned over the years when a medical crisis or the need for long-term care or respite care occurred. We are very fortunate to have stable long-term staff, who is willing to help you recover again if the situation should arise.

Many have chided us over the years for not boasting enough about our history and clinical programs, so we felt the story should finally be told.

We are proud to say our only driving force was your comfort and satisfaction. Everyday I stake my family name and reputation on the care we provide. At Sudbury Pines Extended Care everything is taken personally for your benefit. Should you have any questions or concerns, or find the need for admission/readmission, please call
